Democracy jobs, articles, and more.
Welcome back!
For those joining for the first time, I’m Gabe Lerner. My goal is to be a thoughtful curator of your attention — your most valuable resource. (While sharing the best jobs, funding opportunities, and articles that I find.)

Democracy Notes 2/21
What to read:
(The big news)
Dale R. Anglin announced as Press Forward’s inaugural director
Press Forward is a MacArthur Foundation-led initiative to turbocharge philanthropic funding for local news (to the tune of $500M over 5 years).
Anglin was previously VP at the Cleveland Foundation where she led investments in Documenters, the community news site The Land, WOVU community radio, and more.
Yesterday, Press Forward released this funder guide.
I asked Darryl Holliday — co-founder of City Bureau and Documenters — about the announcement. In Darryl’s words:
“Dale is a perfect choice for this role, particularly in a moment of such crisis and such opportunity in local news. She’s been behind the scenes on issues of policy, philanthropy, youth services and journalism for years and that work speaks volumes. Cleveland has been lucky to have her for some time now, so I’m excited to see the rest of country get to know her as we turn the local news crisis into a local news revival.”
What to watch/listen to/attend:
(Events, podcasts, and more)
Are you Texan (or Texas-curious)? Attend the Texas Tribune’s We the Texans: A Symposium on the State of Democracy on 2/27 in person or online.
How do young people get radicalized? Check out Jenna Spinelle’s interview with Cynthia Miller-Idriss on the Democracy Works podcast.
Miller-Idriss is one of America’s leading experts on the far right and Director of the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL).
Her 2020 book Hate in the Homeland: The New Global Far Right is stellar.
